Hens were the obvious choice.

Mabel and Oliver with Fluffy and Tulip, two of our smaller girls

This one is my favorite. Isn't she pretty? I mean, for a chicken?

We brought our hens home this weekend. There are ten of them, each a different color, which is quite convenient when choosing names. So far, we love them. They are silly and tame and about a million times easier than our dog was. (Happily, Champ moved across the street last summer.) We are not dog people. But we might be chicken people.

We are eagerly awaiting eggs.

  4. We had chickens when I was little too. It'll be fun for your kids. Fresh eggs would be great, we go through a lot of eggs at our house. I want to come over and see them soon.

  10. I've always wanted chickens. What are the other names? And this is a totally dumb question, but aren't you worried about stepping in chicken poop when you're out in your yard? :) I love reading your blog!

the ckickens are mostly in their coop/run. we just let them out for a bit, so the poop isn't such a huge deal.

their names are: caramel, duchess, zebra, fluffy, tulip, smokey, ashes, marley, skull, and rusty. :)

it was so nice to meet you at the park the other day!

My cat definetly thinks so! She is purring and rubbing on the computer screen. I think she would like to snuggle her!

  14. Fun! My brother-in-law's family has chickens and they love it. Yummy eggs, and the kids sell and deliver them to neighbors- everyone loves it!
I'm jealous. Sadly we have an HOA!

  15. How exciting! Chickens are fun pets, and they'll continue to grow on you.
The smaller hens the kids are holding are Sulkies, I think. And your favorite is a Buff Orpington. They're the sweetest. Mine will come up onto my lap if I sit down.
Is the red building the girls' coop?
