the world's biggest egg and other things

One of our hens laid the biggest egg I've ever seen yesterday.  Here it is in Oliver's six year old hands. It's on the left. It must be at least twice as big as a regular egg. I can't wait to see what's inside. I'm hoping it's something like this.

Have you ever given up sugar? I'm thinking of trying it this week. I've never done it before, and I am hoping that if I post my intentions here on my blog, I'll actually stick with it for more than an hour. Can I go a week without baking? Or frozen yogurt? I don't know, but I'm willing to try. I have a hunch that I might feel a whole lot better if I do.

This weekend was perfectly perfect. Nice warm weather, lots of fun family time, nowhere that we had to be. I love lazy weekends.

I hope your weekend was a good one.

**egg update: it was a double yolker**

  1. Yes, I gone with out sugar. You will feel AMAZING! Some weeks are harder than others, but how you feel really makes it worth it. I'll do it with you this week! I need to start again.
By the way, that egg is huge. I can't believe your poor chicken had to push it out!

  2. Wow, that is one big egg! I'm curious to see what's inside of it too. I did not expect it to be what it was in that video!

No, I have never given up sugar, but I've thought about it :). Good luck.

  3. I usually do once a year...I have since April 1 this year. I was sick of feeling worn down and when I eat lots of sugar I lose my appetite for the things that are good for you. SO for 6 weeks (yes even Easter!) I have been doing my own made-up cleanse...fruits and vegetables like crazy, some beans for protein, maybe a little cheese or an egg on a salad. I finally fit into all my clothes...no exercise either!
I still bake, but not as much, and I don't eat anything that I bake...I know that seems like torture, but my kids usually gobble it all up so fast, that it's not sitting around tempting me.

    Funny egg!

  4. Please take pictures when you break that egg! I want to see what's inside. Neat video, I didn't know that was possible.

I've been cutting back on sugar and refined carbs and increasing my protein. I feel so much better. I think the protein helps ward off any cravings. I have more energy and I am finally loosing the rest of that baby weight. The baby is turing two, it's about time!

    Good luck!

It's twins! Pretty sure it's a double yolker, having grown up on a chicken farm. The complete egg inside the eggs is quite rare--I have seen it, but not as often as double or triple yolkers. The most rare I've ever seen is a huge rubber egg with no shell, only the membrane with a complete egg inside of it. So weird!!

As for the sugar elimination from your eating--the first time I did it I was shocked at how many things have sugar in them--sauces, salad dressings, etc. Good luck! My best success has been with eating Paleo (if you don't know what it is, google Paleo Diet Nerd Fitness, it has a good explanation.) It's been a month and it does work well and I am never hungry.

  9. Oh wow! Hurry up and crack it open so you can show us what's inside! That's so cool!
I think you can give up sugar for a week and still bake. One of our favorite oatmeal cookies doesn't have sugar. It has honey instead. And they are good!

  10. Hi Stephanie!
Have you ever heard of the book The Enormous Egg by: Oliver Butterworth?? If you haven't read it, you NEED to get it and read it aloud with your kids!! Its about a boy whose hen lays a HUGE egg. It ends up hatching a dinosaur... I have a 7 year old boy and a 4 year old girl and they were on the edge of their seats every night as we were reading it!

And yes, I do the no sugar thing. I feel like I'm usually on it. Once in a while I'll eat something with sugar, but I usually don't. I feel a huge difference when I eat sugar. The main thing is that I have a much harder time eating healthy things... without sugar, I crave healthy things. With sugar I am a junk food monster. :) Good luck! My technique for going off sugar is to eat every time I'm the least bit craving sugar- but I eat something that's non-sugary. I get out the chips and salsa, eat a hard boiled egg, cut up some fruit, sliced provolone on whole wheat crackers, carrots and sugar snap peas, etc. etc. If I try to just "withstand" the sugar craving, I usually don't last long and end up eating a TON of sugar an hour later. BUT, if I replace the craving with something else in my stomach, I'm able to think more clearly and it makes it so much easier. The worst part of going off sugar is the first week (actually, its just like 3 days), and after that I don't even think about sugar unless I'm at a party and its all around me.

    Anyway, good luck!! :)

  11. I've been thinking of doing a sugar fast for a while now. I just don't know if I have the guts/willpower. I love to bake so much, I'm not positive I would be able to not eat what I bake.

Although, I could probably try it for a week and survive. :)

  12. That video is so funny! Can't wait to hear what was in yours!

Re sugar, I have really been trying to eat better. I always felt so tired and worn down, even though I was working out. I finally knew I had to stop eating as much junk as I was. To get over the cravings I completely gave up anything really sugary, like ice cream or candy, desserts and treats basically. I still had sugar on my cereal in the morning, and salad dressings and so forth that had sugar I still ate. I felt soo much better. In the last three weeks or so I have been binging on the weekends, and I have definitely felt the difference. I hate it! I feel bloated and gassy, and I'm tired and grumpy. Not good. You can do it! You have self-control, you just need to use it. :)

  13. Stephanie. Why don't you do a sugar free week with daily posts of what you are eating. It is sure to inspire! I am thinking that I have not had sugar yet today. Wait-i just checked the whole wheat bread I had for breakfast...it had brown sugar. If it will make me feel better I am willing to try. And is it ok to have honey if you are wanting to get the benefits of cutting out sugar. I'd love to know. It makes me nuts when someone who does not exercise regularly says "oh, I just did this boot camp and my energy was through the roof" I think- hmmmmm. I run marathons. I exercised daily- i'm tired ALL THE TIME. What am I doing wrong. I think it has something to do with diet and also something to do with not getting enough sleep. Anyhow- you are read enough that i think daily food posts would be so helpful for us that want to try too.

  14. I've been doing the no sugar thing for 4 1/2 years (also grain-free, dairy-free, fruit-free). Several of the comments have mentioned eating more protein; this really does help. I would also very slowly add coconut oil to your diet. The coconut oil will give you more sustained energy than you get from carbs.

  15. That is amazing! I can't wait to have chickens and totally hope I get a large egg too!
I've never given up "sugar" particularly but I have given up carbs and I always feel great when I do! I don't binge on meat and dairy but just take in more veggies and cut out breads, pastas; pretty much comfort food in general!
It's a great way to loose a few extra pounds if needed.. although from the looks of it, you definitely don't need to loose any!

  16. Perhaps the difference between the egg inside and egg and a double yolk egg is the same as the difference between siamese twins and regular twins.

I've never seen eggs that big. Too cool!

  17. I've been with out sugar...The first few days are the hardest, and I had a few headaches- but it was all better from there. A lot more energy and just feeling better. I did allow myself to have fruits because they have minerals and vitamins too! Good luck. You can do it if you really want to!

  18. going without sugar can be really hard at first. what helps me is just completely making up my mind that i'm going to do it... if i go into it thinking "i'm gonna eat less sugar" or "i'm gonna try not to eat sugar" it just doesn't work. good luck!

  19. Crazy egg!
I'd love to hear how your no sugar week goes! I've always thought about doing it but the thinking is where it stops. I haven't actually gone without it for more than a day. Good luck!

  20. You should weigh the eggs, Stephanie. We've had a few that were XLarge size, ounce wise. When I see a really large egg in the nest box I always think 'ouch!'.

  21. Just reading these no sugar comments. I gave up sugar for lent a year ago and then totally binged on Saturday and my body bonked. So my warning is to ease back into it. Good luck!
