Dresses aren't just for Sunday anymore.
I'm still working on my personal uniform.
How do you feel about dresses? I used to only wear them to church. I'll be honest, they made me feel uncomfortable for everyday wear. I felt too dressed up. But then I would see this sister, or this one wearing them around the house, and I decided that I needed to change my attitude. They could be casual. And comfortable, too! And they definitely looked more put together than lounge pants and a dumb tee shirt, which is what I used to wear. I scored with this pattern. I've now made it four times.
What about skirts, you say? Well, skirts are fine. But there's always the tucking issue. Do I tuck in my shirt, or not? I never know the right answer, and I feel like I end up looking sloppy. Plus, my waistline isn't my best feature, so I'd rather not draw too much attention to it. Dresses are as straight forward as it gets. Tunics, too (and much easier to nurse in!).
I used the most cheerful swiss dot I think I've ever seen for this dress. It is super thin and cool and makes me very happy.
What do you think? Are dresses in heavy rotation in your wardrobe?

I've found myself adding dresses in heavily for my summer wardrobe too, even though I used to not wear them. They are cool, comfy, and you can't beat the simplicity of it being just one item of clothing! No matching required! I tend to favor jersey dresses. They are just so easy! Love the one you sewed though! Cute!
ReplyDeleteyou know i love dresses, and i love that fabric!! so cute steph.
ReplyDeleteI love that little girl hiding under the bed bench - so cute how she snuck into that picture!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI don't wear too many dresses because I have a long torso and it is hard to find dresses that fit properly. But I do love skirts. I don't think it looks too sloppy to wear them with a shirt untucked. There are plenty of fancier type t-shirts that look nice with a pretty skirt.
ReplyDeleteI am with Ginger, I have yet to find a dress that fits with my long torso. I like a skirt- but I am the queen of casual. I have sunday skirts and other day skirts. I love them for summer. My waist is probably my best feature..so I like something that fits but flows at the hips. I will wear a fitted tee or even a funky logo tee (you know casual).
ReplyDeleteI love dresses, you've inspired me to try and make one for myself...because I can't find one at a store to save my life!
ReplyDeleteWell you look absolutely adorable! I really need to get that pattern.
ReplyDeleteI love wearing skirts/dresses in the summer but it was something that took me a while to get used to. I'm still having a hard time straying from my jeans and a long sleeved shirt in the winter though.
I'll say it again...you look so dang cute!
I wear a dress every day once late March/early April hits. Here in good ole' TN the heat and humidity mandate it!
ReplyDeleteI love skirts and am now starting to enjoy dresses a little more. It's just a matter of finding them that are casual enough. I may need to try sewing me one and using this pattern!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally jealous that your blog always looks sunny and warm. All we have here in Idaho at the moment is rain and sometimes snow. :(
i love cool summer dresses and as long as I can nurse in them I wear them often. Jeans annoy me for the most part and never fit right. I have a few pairs I like and wear but skirts and dresses are my go-to's
ReplyDeleteps. that is a super cute dress! Great job! We should trade patterns sometime. :)
ReplyDeleteI cam across your blog a couple months ago and I absolutely love it! You're doing a great job and that dress is absolutely beautiful! I am SO trying to work dresses into my everyday rotation; I feel like I've done the yoga pants/tee shirt or shorts/tee shirt for so long and it's time for a change! I've recently fell in love with kimono type dresses because they're so easy to nurse in.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly how you feel. I wish I could comfotably wear dresses during the day but I always feel so over dressed for running about after a toddler. Perhaps I'll start making the effort too!
ReplyDeleteI do like wearing dresses. I just feel like I have a hard time wearing them casually too. Or maybe just a hard time finding the right one. I think that's it. It would have to look casual and I would have to be able to wear it without a slip. Anyway, I love the dress in your picture. Very pretty!
ReplyDeleteLove this dress and love wearing dresses. I feel much happier when I am wearing clothes that are not sweats.

ReplyDeleteI wear a dress or skirt 6 out of 7 days. (I agree with you on the tucking issue btw, and I never seem to get it right).
ReplyDeleteI really love the print you chose for this dress and the dress itself is too cute! Are you going to start offering dresses again?

It's by the author of "Secret Lives of Dresses" (which I loved, by the way). She is totally into wearing dresses all the time.

ReplyDeletein summertime, i wear a lot of skirts and dresses.
ReplyDeleteI love sundresses! They are the staple of my summer wardrobe. I love skirts as well, they are perfect for spring with a casual tee but Utah spring weather is too fickle to really work these into my wardrobe lately!
ReplyDeletepeople ask me constantly why i only ever seem to wear dresses: c'mon guys, they're SO easy and SO comfortable! no tucking issues, you just slip them on, and you're free! i love love them and still have no desire to add to my (just) 1 pair of pants. hahahahhaha - dresses and skirts for the win!
ReplyDeletelove you steph. plus, love this photo - hehe! mike and stella in the background are so great :)
oh! another thing. just coming from ghana, where it is 40 degrees (celsius) nearly every day, and yet the women look drop dead amazing. they all (and i mean ALL) wear these fantastic custom tailored long, form-fitting gowns in outrageously rad prints. sometimes they're 2 pieces, sometimes just one. and c'mon. if ghanaian women in that heat, w/o AC, walking around like crazy, with babies and chores galore, can look that hot? i think we can too. right? seriously. it was like a fashion parade, i wish i could have taken pictures.
ReplyDeleteI think your dress is super cute, but I AM IN LOVE with your shoes!! What brand are they? They are so stinkin' cute!!!!! You are always so fashionable.
ReplyDeleteI been a dressy girl..Ever since I been a little girl... I love dresses and skirts.....And pretty little tops....Fancy and my friend heheehhe...I love the summer fashions.....♥
ReplyDeleteThe dress is cute (isn't sewing great?), but not as cute as little Elliott crawling about the bed.
ReplyDeleteI also love a good dress, but finding one that is modest enough that I only need to wear a dress and not some sort of layer under it is an ultimate challenge.
ReplyDeleteBut that pattern is super cute! I don't think the dress would be near long enough for me, but the tunic version might be quite cute!
I love your saltwater sandals! I have been debating about getting a pair for myself (my girls live in them) and it is nice to see them modeled on an adult. so cute. and I love your dress. In TX, dresses are a year-round staple.
ReplyDeleteWhy oh why don't I sew?
ReplyDeletedresses dresses dresses! that one is too cute. i love them too much
ReplyDeleteLOVE your shoes. wish i was a skinny as you so i could pull off that dress. i've been asked a lot lately why so many dresses and skirts...i'm with julianne - so much easier and keeps you so much cooler in the heat -- the biggest lesson i learned after five houston summers, that's for sure.
