Chickens are the new dog.

You should get some.

They'll eat all of your weeds and bugs, and anything else you want to give them, too. Like yogurt that's about to expire. Or stale bread. Or squishy apples. Or vegetables your kids won't eat. And they'll love you for it. They'll run to meet you when you step outside and will follow you anywhere. They put themselves to bed. They look really silly when they run. They are good with children. And they give you eggs! Delicious, miraculous, beautiful eggs.

At first, I thought we would keep them in their coop all of the time. But it wasn't long before we let them roam free in the yard. They are settling in nicely, and we are now getting 6 or 7 eggs a day.

Just don't go out back without your shoes on.

  1. the pretty colors of your eggs alone would be incentive for me to get some chickens. And I also think chickens would be more fun than dogs.

  4. They sound like SO much fun. I've been wanting some for ages. Maybe in our next house we'll be able to do it. Are you swimming in eggs or are you able to keep up?

Ha ha...I have no desire to keep chickens, even though I love eggs. I grew up on a poultry farm with 10 000+ hens. I've picked my share of eggs to last my life time so I'm fine with getting them at the store! :)

  8. Our suburban neighbors have chickens. It's a little trickier in Minnesota in the winter. So, they have the warmth of their garage but the vehicles stay outside.

The best part is they are lovely, generous neighbors. We love "the girls!"

  9. Beautiful...looks like a picture from a Martha Stewart magazine! Do you have Araucana chickens? Can you please tell where you ordered your chickens from and what type they are? Thanks! Enjoy your new "dogs". ;)

  10. We have thought about it- but I think our dog would eat them and that is no good. . . our neighbor has a bunch so we buy eggs from her. They are so much prettier than the store bought ones!

ps. i love that pic of you and your hubby in your wedding dress. you are beautiful.

we are lame and don't even know what kind of chickens we have. we must have an araucana, since they are green egg layers, i think, but i really don't know for sure. there are 10 of them, and they all look different. we just found them on craigslist, and the guy we bought them from didn't speak much english. :) we are winging it, but so far its been working out.

  17. I've always wanted chickens - my grandmother had them and when we visited her in the summer I cant tell you how many hours we spent watching/chasing/feeding those things. My hubs (a true city boy) knows I want some so we will see...one day. A girl can dream. I want chickens, not diamonds LOL!! Love your blog and you are just cute!

  18. Easter Eggers are probably laying your beautiful blue eggs. They're sweet girls, just perfect for a family. Aren't the hens just hilarious sometimes? Ours go crazy for raisins.
