I really love my white kitchen.

Have I mentioned how much I love my white kitchen? Because I do. A lot.

Just for kicks, here's what the kitchen looked like when we first saw our house 5 years ago:

Hello 1978.

The previous owners had already chosen and paid for a new kitchen. All we had to do was raise the ceiling and paint the walls and trim and put in new light fixtures and baseboards.

And then we had this:

Which now looks like this:

More before and after shots:

Guy, it was so brown before.

I have a few tips to share. Do you have any questions?

  9. I'm beyond jealous. (Frankly, of all pictures - including the first - since our ancient house currently boasts a kitchen from about 1958.) You have an amazing eye for soothing design.

  10. It was lovely before, but now it is totally your own! I am convinced I will do this in my home soon. Please give us the process step by step if that is not too tedious. If I do it, I do not want to ruin my kitchen!
And...did you go stark white or tone it down a bit?

    Good job! It's beautiful!

  14. Your open cake stand cupboard is just the prettiest thing EVER! Love love love it. I always (in my head) associate stainless steel appliances with dark cabinetry, but you have proved that they look wonderful with white too. When we do something about our kitchen cabinets someday, I will feel so much better about this house.

  19. It's looks SO lovely. The first thought I had was, "I NEED MORE CAKE STANDS!" I think I only have one!
I also noticed cute little Penelope! We have that up in our kitchen too.
And one more comment for my sister... I have stainless appliances and white cabinets.... and have had them for 3.5 years.... did you never notice? :)

  22. tips tips tips please!

my husband is very wary to let me paint the walnut cupboards in our home (only 5 years old). your open cupboard with cake plates is brilliant and really opens up the space.

do you have doors behind your curtains under the sink? i love the curtain look but not very baby proof i think : )

  24. I have been trying to convince my husband for about 2 years that our kitchen needs to be green with white cupboards. Now after seeing your before and after pics he is all in.

Please share your tips! And what paint and color did you use on your walls?

  25. Ya, like a million. I am ready to pain my cupboards white, but I keep getting conflicting advice. Latex or oil base? Primer necessary? To sand or not to sand? Please share how you did it.

    Thx!

  27. Yes! I want to know how you did every inch of it! We just moved into a brand new house in May, it was already built when we found it though and so the kitchen, like yours was already picked out and it was not white which is what I wanted/want! So i keep talking to my husband about painting them white but he's super hesitant. After seeing your pictures though I want to do it even more. I just don't where to even start!

Good job! It really looks amazing!

  28. I love the curtain above the sink and the cake stands!

  29. I too love white kitchens. Your after is fantastic.

I must ask, is the fabric under the sink really a curtain or is it attached to the cupboard doors? I LOVE the look of a fabric curtain... I don't have small children but I do have dogs and that doesn't mix well with the 'stuff' under the sink.

  30. It was very pretty before (okay, not the 70s style, but the lighter wood) and it's pretty now. I like how you opened one of the cabinets for your cake plates and added a skirt below the sink. Nice job, I'm sure that was not easy to do!

  31. I want to paint ours too. We have oak right now and I have wanted white for years now. How much work and time did it take? What paint and how many coats would it take to look as good as yours?

Beautiful work and great eye you have!!!

  36. White is also mine favorite color. I have noticed that Most of the homeowners chose mix match metal color which is also bang on. I love to refurbish my kitchen with white cabinets and dark woods.

It was a lovely transformation! Everything looks so perfectly awesome! The color, the lighting fixtures and the window treatments all created a wonderful ambiance. How long did it take you to finish the renovation?
