My Husband

Because the kids and I are leaving Mike for a week to go to California, and because he will be alone on Father's Day, I thought it would be nice if I left my blog with a tribute to him. Those of you who are lucky enough to know Mike, know how handsome, clever and funny he is. But did you know that he is also the best father? Here are two recent examples that show some of his killer fatherly skills.

1. Last month, we had to take Mabel to the emergency room because her eyeball was swollen. It was gross and very sad. Mabel was laying on a bed, her face surrounded by mounds of towels, with a bag of saline solution hanging near her head. A kind nurse had the unfortunate task of washing out the eye of a hysterical 4 year old. While I sat on a chair nearby with my head between my knees so I wouldn't pass out, Mike took control of the situation. In the most gentle, most calming voice I have ever heard, he talked Mabel out of crying and into opening her eye wide so the nurse could flush it out. It was amazing. As long as Mike was whispering in Mabel's ear, she was able to keep her eye open. I don't know what I would have done without him.

2. The other night, Mike took the kids to the grocery store (did I mention that he does all of the grocery shopping in our house?) and came home with the ingredients to make the most delicious egg and potato tacos I have ever had the pleasure of eating. He is a far better cook than I will ever be. Also, he makes home made tortillas. Yah, that's right. I totally scored when I married him.

We will miss him terribly this next week, but someone in this family has to work for a living.

See you when we get back!

Recipe of the Week

Cinnamon Banana Bread

2-3 ripe bananas, mashed
1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 egg, beaten
a pinch of salt
1/4 cup melted butter
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Mix all ingredients in the order listed. Place in a greased bread pan and bake at 350 for about 50 minutes.
Makes 1 loaf.

This bread is my new favorite. The cinnamon makes it simply delightful (and worth heating up your whole house with a hot oven on a hot summer day!).

We Need Sprinklers

We live in the desert.
But I like to pretend that we don't.
I really want a lush, green yard.

During the summer (and spring and fall),
the temperature here is high and the sun is scorching.
It is hard to have a green lawn.
Especially if you don't have sprinklers!

That means I spend my mornings (almost all of them)
rotating our hose around the yard
every 15 minutes.
Either I am super lazy, or this is just a very boring chore,
beacause it makes me tired.

The frustrating part is that after all of that,
our grass still isn't very green and half of our plants are dying.

Do we have any trench diggers out there?
I am willing to pay in brownies.
Sprinklers would be really nice.

Waffles

Mabel: "Oliver, why do you always want waffles for breakfast?"
Oliver (in a really grumpy voice): "Because I wike waffles! Humpf."
