for baking

This evening is our neighborhood's annual Chili Cook-off. It is one of my favorite events of the year. There are carnival games for the kids, and then all of the chili and cornbread you can eat. It is so much fun.

I spent the afternoon in my kitchen, baking a double batch of cornbread and Ellen's apple crisp for the party. Baking is one of my favorite things to do, and since I've started limiting my sugar, I haven't been baking as much as I used to. I miss it! So I happily signed up to bring some things this evening, knowing it would give me an excuse to use my baking muscles. Boy, was it fun. I am grateful for baking. Silly, but true, it makes me very happy.

What have you baked lately?

  1. I'm making a French Silk pie for mom and dad's arrival tomorrow. I don't think it actually requires any baking, which is kind of good, as I am not that great at it. Hoping it's yummy, though!

  2. I'm not a big baker, but I love a day when I have time to cook a big dinner with out the rush of after school crazy. Apple crisp sounds awesome!

  3. Oh Ellen's apple crisp is amazing! I've already made it and then gave the recipe to 3 people so far, it's that good.
I made german chocolate pie today
and s'mores bars (from this is the only recipe fro s'mores bars that I've ever liked.

My Brother’s Amazing S’mores Bars (a little different than a previous one that I posted):

2 1/4 cups Graham Crackers (1.5 sleeves), crushed
    2/3 cup butter, melted
    1/3 cup sugar
    1/2 cup butter, softened
    1/2 cup shortening
    3/4 cup sugar
    3/4 cup brown sugar
    2 eggs
    1 tsp vanilla
    2 1/4 cups flour
    1 tsp salt
    1 tsp baking soda
2 cups mini marshmallows <—————-Seriously, the more the merrier with this one!
    1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
    3 Hershey Bars

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar. Press into the bottom of a 13×9 in pan. Bake for 7 minutes. Allow to cool slightly.

Cream butter, shortening, sugar and brown sugar together. Blend in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour, salt and baking soda. By hand mix in the chocolate chips and marshmallows.

Spread over the graham cracker crust. Bake for 10 minutes. Top with broken pieces of Hershey Bars. Return to oven and bake for 15 more minutes. Remove and allow to cool before cutting. Enjoy!

  4. German apple cake. Served warm with vanilla iceream and a warm carmel sauce. We were all dieing over the goodness of it.

  5. I welcomed fall by making my grandmother's Molasses Sugar Cookies.

  6. I love baking, too! I'm feeling the need to give up sugar also... and I know I will miss mixing butter, sugar, and flour together. Chocolate chip cookies and apple crisp were the last two things I made.

  7. I love baking too (as you know). I made sunken kiss cookies last week and took them to work. They were a big hit!
