for motherhood

I started thinking about this post at approximately 4:02 am, minutes after Oliver came to tell me that Elliot was throwing up. Why would I be grateful for motherhood at a time like that? Because motherhood makes a woman willing to do anything for her children, even get out of a very warm bed on a very chilly, rainy night to clean up a mess.

This life is better than I ever dreamed it would be. Sure there are tough moments, and long nights, and sick kids. But there is so much joy in caring for these children. Being their mother is one of my greatest blessings.

I let Stella stay home from school today. Kindergarten plumb wears her out. Plus, it hasn't stopped raining since last night and I couldn't bear to send her out into this cold, wet day. So we are hunkering down, watching movies, and trying to get rid of the throw-ups. Maybe we'll bake some cookies for the big kids when they get home.

This is the life, I tell you!

  2. I feel the same...it's in the hard moments, I think, that you realize you couldn't be doing anything else more important. Hope everyone feels better!

  3. I am ready for a week of doing nothing but hanging out. We have been running ourselves ragged around here. I hope Elliot is better today! It's so incongruent with his personality to be glum. :(

  4. I hope Elliot is feeling better very soon! I am so glad that Grant didn't have school today because we've enjoyed laying around in our PJ's and watching the rain all day. And we're going to make cookies too!

  6. I was greeted by my four-year-old this way today: "Mom, you have to come and see my bed. It is a real mess." I didn't understand what the problem could be until I noticed his p.j.s Apparently he threw up in his sleep :( Poor kid. Thankful for the washer and dryer today!

  7. Thank you for this reminder and I whole-heartedly agree, this is what truly makes a family home, being together in and through the hard times. Today I am grateful for an always on the go toddler, his climbing and knack for finding trouble. Exhausting but I love him more each day, the privilege of watching him grow.

  9. oh the sickies. no fun, but it certainly makes you feel loved and needed as mother. i was at the school the other day and helped one of jayden's friends get to the bathroom amid a fit of sick. even a big 5th grader is laid low when hovering over a potty loosing his breakfast. it made me feel good that i was the one who was there to hand him a cup of water to swish with and help him to the nurse -- hoping that one day when my babies are sick and i'm not there, another mama will be there to help them.
