to nap or not to nap

Elliot is in that tricky stage where he still needs a nap, but then has a hard time falling asleep at night. And when he can't fall right asleep, he keeps Oliver awake, and then Oliver gets grumpy because being a third grader is hard work and sometimes little brothers are a pain.

So today I thought we'd try skipping the nap and watching a movie for quiet time instead. 34 minutes into the movie and he was out cold on the couch. Shoot.

I love that my kids share rooms. I think that Oliver is learning some very valuable lessons right now, but goodness, sometimes it's tough.

  1. That is a difficult situation. I quit naps for the boys at Elliot's age. Woud keep them very busy with a project or something and then they were ready for bed by 6:00 or 6:30. Grampy went to work early around 5:00pm and so I did all of my housework etc in the eve after they were in bed asleep. It worked for me but may not work for you because Mike is home for dinner and the eve with you and the kid.

  2. Our three boys share a room as well (the twins, 5, are in a bunkbed & the baby, 2, in a crib) and while I love the coziness of having them all together and the simplicity of reading stories and saying goodnight in one room, the mornings are rough. The older two want to wake up around 5am-- they are KILLING me!-- and they often wake up the baby in the process. I am determined to see this through, but it is rough!
The twins napped until their 4th birthday. They needed it. I have a feeling, though, that little brother will not nap as long as they did.

  3. We've been in the stage with a certain 3 year old for at least 6 months. I think it has to be one of the hardest stages for a parent. Still, I do believe in kids sharing rooms, and ours (4 boys/2girls) have had numerous arrangements based on their needs.

  4. This picture is so great of him. I dislike the point where they start to outgrow naps. Boo.

  5. It is so frustrating when those little bodies need to nap but their minds think they don't. I agree about kids sharing rooms- there is so much to learn! Whenever I hear complaints about having to share I remind my children that really, I'm just preparing them for the future. After sharing with a sibling they'll move on to college roommates, mission companions and eventually a spouse. They better get used to it! Ha!

  6. Sure, Elliot fell asleep, But you don't have to let him sleep for two hours. Just wake him up after 20 or 30 minutes and propose a fun project to do with him. (Assuming he is easy to wake up.)
