phone rules

I've been trying to be better about putting my phone away. Is this something you struggle with, too? The thing is, I don't want my kids to remember me with a phone forever in my hand. And I want them to have my full attention when they need it (which is almost always). It is such a silly addiction, that I am determined to quit it. I've blocked off hours of my days and all day Sunday when I won't have my phone with me. And it's supposed to stay in the kitchen at night, not on my bedside table. My phone is not the last thing I need to see before I go to bed. It feels good to put limits on it. I find that when I stick to my rules, life is quieter and my focus is so much stronger. I feel less frazzled, and I am more aware of the needs of my family. I love instagram and reading blogs, etc, but none of that should come before what is happening in my real life at that moment. Why is this is a lesson that I constantly need to relearn?

Anyway, Mike sent this video to me and I thought it was excellent. What do you think? Surely I'm not alone in this.

  1. I saw this video yesterday and believe everyone should. Going out to dinner, walking on campus, or just down the street everyone is texting or using their phone. We are losing the art of talking to each other or even looking at them. I don't even turn mine on or look at it for days on end.
    Good for you!!!!!

This is such a good reminder! I'm addicted to mine and need to put more of an effort in to shut it off when I'm with my family.

  3. Great video! This has been a HUGE issue in our home and my husband and I are trying to break the bad habit. It is an addition, one that I really hope to break. Good for you...this is an inspiration.

  5. I saw this and thought it was very good. I've been trying to be better too. It's hard because our devices are addicting. Let us know how you are doing soon!

  6. Why do you need to re-learn this? Because things we struggle with are things we need to have reminders of all the time until we can break the habit.

I do the same thing. Thanks for the video.

  9. why toni and i will never give up our old school flip-phone. (except when they break and the only phones you can buy are smartphones - i'm dreading it!) i spend enough time on my laptop for work, i don't want to look at more screens. (i am glad dad gave me that ipod so i can instagram though, of course! it's the only thing i use it for. hehe)
