Granite Flats

I have really fond memories of piling onto the couch and watching tv with my family growing up. We loved shows like Family Ties, the Cosby Show, The Wonder Years, and all of TGIF lineup every Friday night. I realized recently, that aside from a random episode of the Amazing Race here and there, Mike and I never watch tv with our kids.

The other night, we all found ourselves sitting around the family room, flipping channels for a minute before bed, and just in those few minutes we heard enough bad language to remind us why we never watch tv together. There is nothing worth watching! Even the shows geared toward my older kids make me feel uncomfortable sometimes. Where have all of the family friendly shows gone? Sheesh.

So you can imagine my excitement when I was asked by BYUtv to preview their new, family friendly, show, Granite Flats.

It takes place in a small, quiet town in Colorado in the 1960s. There is an explosion on the nearby military base, and it is up to three young friends and the town sheriff to unravel the mystery. It is clean, wholesome, and entertaining - totally something we could watch as a family together.

After seeing the first episode, Mabel, who is ten, said, "It was really cool. I can't wait to watch the next episode." When I asked her what she liked about it, she said she enjoyed the action, mystery, and characters.

Oliver, eight years old, immediately said, "Can I watch the next episode?"

We ended up watching the first two episodes and "The Making of Granite Flats", too. My kids couldn't get enough of it, and they can't wait for the show's season to begin this Sunday.

Here's the good news: you don't have to have cable or satellite to watch BYUtv. I had no idea! You can access BYUtv programming on a roku device, the BYUtv website, or on the iPad/iPhone app. I love that BYUtv's tagline is "See the good". I believe that there is a lot of good out there, and BYUtv can help us find it. Then hopefully, our family can create the same kind of memories I have from my childhood.

The show premieres April 7. I hope you'll check it out!

The Fine Print: I was compensated for this post (mostly with candy), but the opinions are entirely mine (and Mabel and Oliver's).

It really is sad. I miss TGIF! I was in my early 20's for TGIF and my friends and I would cook dinner and watch. As adults!

Now even sitcoms are so husband/father bashing. They are all portrayed as idiots. The most "normal" couples are homosexual.

Even cartoons! So many cartoon characters now are disrespectful to their parents and sarcastic to their friends.

    It just makes me sad.

  2. We don't have cable for the same reasons you listed above. There's just too much filth on it these days. I miss the "olden" days of watching the TGIF lineup too. My siblings and I looked forward to watching those shows together all week long. I'm looking forward to checking out this new show on BYUtv. Thanks for the heads up!

  3. I've seen the previews for this show. It does look good. I'm excited to watch it. And I LOVE that I don't have to have cable to be able to see it. So fun that you've been able to watch it already. Good review Stephanie!
And TGIF...loved it! I also looked forward all week long to watching that.

  4. I'm so glad to hear that. There is so little we can watch together. Even if a show is fine the commercials are terrible. :( Thanks Stephanie!

  7. My kids (3 and under) won't watch "daddy shows" (non cartoons) but they were captivated by Granite Flats. Great Post!

  8. I'm so glad you found a family friendly show. There is a device called Clear Play that is a DVD player with filters. Filters out the filth. Every now and then they miss some stuff, though or still leaves too much to the imagination. But it has really helped us to be able to watch a few more movies than we would have otherwise. If it were totally up to me, I'd be even stricter regarding what my kids watch.

  9. Ugh! I totally hate TV, too. I never watch it, and I really dislike all the shows geared toward pre-teens. But I will be checking this out Sunday night! I think the boys will really like it. Thanks for the tip.

  10. toni and i were discussing the same thing - reminiscing about "stefan urkel" hahahaha, and how we have no idea what shows we'd all watch together eventually. what happened to all those good family situational shows that taught you stuff? for real! i lived for tgif.

  11. We watched Granite Flats for a little while after conference ended, but the switch from Flats to commercial was really jarring. I wish BYUTV would figure out how to say, "We're doing a commercial break now" and "Now, Back to our program!"
