the girls' room

I shared a room with my sister, Leslie, until she left for college. It was the best thing about my childhood, and I think we are such good friends to this day because of it. I wanted that for my girls, too. For the past few years, Mabel and Oliver had been sharing a room in the basement. Now that Elliot is old enough to move downstairs with Oliver, it was time to put the girls together.

This same antique, marble-topped, cupboard sat between mine and Leslie's beds. It is my favorite piece of furniture, and I am so glad my girls get to use it.

The reading lights and bedding (except for the big white pillow cases that I made out of some old sheets) are from Ikea. The headboards are old crib parts, and the dream catchers are from pit stops between here and just about everywhere else.

This room is tiny, and it's in the basement (next door to the boys). Once we cleared out the old guest bed, I was starting to worry that two beds wouldn't fit!  But they did, and somehow, magically, the wall paper and trim make the ceiling feel about 10 feet tall.

Mabel and Stella have only slept in their new room for a few nights, but I can already see a difference in their relationship - a closeness that wasn't there before. There are five years between them, and hopefully those years won't matter much anymore.

  4. The room looks lovely. You have great talent. Many happy memories will be made there, I'm sure. My sister and I shared a very small room, were 6 years apart in age, and we are the best of friends.

  5. my 8yo and 3yo share a bedroom. They have the sweetest relationship! Most nights when I go to check on them before I go to bed, I find the littlest has crawled into bed with her sister and they are fast asleep and sprawled all over each other. Since my sister and I were/are not close it is just the sweetest thing EVER to see my girls love each other like they do. I'm sure your girls will too, 5years is nothin'!

  7. So beautiful! I have my three boys all sharing a room, not necessarily because we have to, but because of the relationships I hope grow there. There's nothing like a sibling :)

  8. I love the room. My two sisters and I shared a room and a full size bed until we were in Middle School and then my older sister got her own room and we went to bunk beds. There are two years between me and my older sister and 13 months between me and my younger sister. We are the closest of friends, best friends really. So many memories of growing up, putting on plays for our parents with our brother, playing with barbies or pretending Mom's afghans were long gowns for our fancy ball.

I know your girls will forge their own memories that will be exclusively their own in that beautiful bedroom.

  10. I remember the marble top cupboard in your room. As I have said before Steph you are soooo creative and can make something so special out of very little. Love the girl's room and what you did with it.

  12. I love how simple and clean you keep your lines of your rooms. HOW DO YOU DO IT? The girls' collectibles "Junk" seeps in everywhere at our house. You inspire me again my dear : )

  14. If I had to choose a bed for my one day daughters to live in, it would be this room. I am obsessed with the wallpaper, especially! Do you ever sell your sewing creations? I have been dying for a white ruffled pillow exactly like that for so long but can't find anything I like.If you do sell, my email is Libbylou222@gmail.com , I'd be very interested!

  15. what a pretty room for two lucky girls. my sister and i shared a room when we lived in AZ and we loved it. going back to rooms of our own when we moved back to UT was torture and every other night or so we would end up in each others bed because we missed each other.
