decorated

Lately I've been feeling like there is just too much stuff in this world, and I don't want any of it in my house. So I scaled back our Christmas decorations this year. Not that I ever really go overboard, but I put up even fewer than usual, and I'm ok with that. These little trees and houses mixed with my cake stands are my favorite.

I gave the kids free reign over the tree. Once they lost interest, I packed up the rest of the ornaments and put them away. And you know what? It looks totally great with just their favorites. Stella put out the Nativity sets for me, arranging all of the little pieces just how she wanted them.

I still haven't figured out where to hang our stockings, but I'll get to it, hopefully sometime before Christmas Eve.

Am I the only one who feels behind?

  1. You are not behind at all. And I adore your decorations...I feel the same way about all the "stuff" and my house feels perfect with simple/less. I love the reindeer on the Nativity scene. :)

  2. Moving twice in the last year and a half made me feel exactly the same. About EVERYTHING! But especially Christmas stuff. We don't do much, and I am okay with that. Several of my decorations got ruined in the move to AZ, and I never bothered to replace them because I just didn't want to waste the time and money.
The only thing I was sad to lose, which I can't find anywhere, is one of my nativity sets. Those are what Christmas is truly about, so it pains me to not have a favorite.

  3. The houses & trees with the cake stands are so pretty! I am behind too. I'll finally be getting decorations out this weekend; the reason I haven't yet is that I'm tired of my usual stuff and want to change it up but haven't figured out how to do that without spending a lot of money. I'm also behind on Christmast shopping. Thanks for the lovely pictures!

  4. I love it. It seems every year I am hoping to get rid of another box of Christmas. I just put out my special nativities this year and I asked Nate if I would be a scruge not to put up everything. I think I will take a box of stuff to the valley and see what family members want it! It is better to focus on the season. We have cut back on gifts too. something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read...and santa gives one gift each. (they get loads of stuff from my inlaws, so it is still a little over the top with gifts, but at least we scaled back at home and have tried to focus a bit more on service. And this year I had the kids draw a sibbling name too so they can think of their family.

  5. beautiful...simple, purposeful and absolutely beautiful. I have to keep reminding myself, "This is good enough. More isn't always better." Thanks for the calm, unrushed style of your blog. I love it!

  6. I love the trees and houses. Very sweet and cute. You are not behind at all, it's still the first week of December. I will hopefully be putting up a little Christmas decor next week. I'm excited to have Grant help me this year. I love that your kids decorated the tree and I like the reindeer on top of the nativity. :)

  7. Myhouse is decorated and probably over done but it makes me feel good when people walk in and say this is a beautiful Christmas house and should be in a magazine. Don't know how much longer I can do this but I do enjoy doing it. Did use fewer decorations this year, You house always look amazing and I like the way you do things. Love you

  8. I decorated with less stuff this year too. Often by the end of December I start to feel a bit claustrophobic (sp?) in my own home because it feels like there's just stuff everywhere. So I decorated A LOT more simply and I love it. I feel like I can breath easier, if that makes any sense.

    I love your little trees!

  10. as this is my first year as a reformed messy person, i can attest that the decorations drive me nuts! i feel like i can't keep anything clean or orderly, they are just everywhere. and i agree, claustrophobia indeed.

my grandma was right, less really is more.
