quintessential summer dress

or candy striper? I can't quite decide. But either way, I think I love it.

I've sewn this dress a few times (Simplicity 2360), but this is the first time for myself. I chose a summery black seersucker. The pattern is pretty straightforward, but the flounce and neck binding require a little finesse, and might frustrate a beginning sewer. There are no buttonholes or zippers or sleeves to set, though, so it is a quick project.

I'm trying to be very deliberate with my wardrobe. Sewing is the best way for me to accomplish that, I think. It takes a lot of time to choose a pattern and fabric, not to mention the sewing and fitting. I'm not one for impulse purchases, so building my wardrobe this way feels right.

Do you sew? If not, do you wish you did? Would you be interested in taking lessons?

  1. Yes I wish i could sew and I would like to take some lessons--but Im not sure where or when I would fit it in:) Your dress is beautiful and I am always so very impressed with your creations. You are very talented!!

  2. I do sew, straight lines mostly (quilts), but I have made clothes before. I wish I had "flair" though, because the things I sew turn out a little on the barely 'underwhelm' side. I'm keeping track of the patterns you are showing. I hope to go through pattern books and see if they might fit me. I'm an old-fashioned grandma-shape now...

  3. You are beautiful and so is that dress.

I sew a little bit. Mostly pillow cases and small, home projects. My mom is quite the seamstress, think vogue patterns and sometimes making her own. I learned from her and use a Bernina but I am not nearly up to her (or your!) skill level.

  6. That dress is too perfect! I sew a tiny bit, enough to whip up a costume before Halloween sometimes. I would take lessons in a heartbeat if I lived closer to you! Hmm...maybe skype....

  13. I took a sewing class when I was at BYU. I definitely need a refresher. I was just wondering when you sew because I have four kids as well and my youngest who is twenty two months would want to sew right along with me. I guess if I stayed up late I could sew. I have wanted to start sewing group but it hasn't happened yet. I love your style and you have wonderful skills.

  14. You look beautiful in that dress! I took some sewing lessons back in my teens-- a long, long time ago. I always keep saying I should buy a sewing machine and try some classes again.

  16. I made myself a dress once that was almost like that. I loved it. And I love to sew. I'm working on my Easter dress this week. It's polyester and I'm not sure how it's going to turn out. I may end up buying something. :)

  21. oh you should totally give lessons. i would take some! over skype maybe? hehe. then i'd need a sewing machine and where on earth would we put that...? toni bought us 2 tennis rackets yesterday and that is enough to crowd the place. :)

  22. I see clothes on you and wonder why I can't rock clothes like that?! you look super cute. No, i don't sew a bunch. I mostly have done jean blankets. I don't really know how to read patterns, and I run out of time or really don't have much time to sew things. Wish i could learn.

  23. It looks beautiful on you! Abbey loves her sewing lessons-she might take them up again this summer now that she has some extra minutes in the day. I have given up, myself. :)

The longer your hair gets, the more you and Leslie look alike. Very fun.

I LOVE this dress and love seersucker.

Right after college graduation I took sewing lessons and made clothes for friends' children for years. I made a few things for myself but not many.

It has been way too long since my sewing machine has been serviced OR in service. I for sure miss it but need a designated space to sew. Not there yet in my home.

I hope to return in the near future.

  26. i really love that dress for summer sundays. and yes, all us girls had to take sewing lessons growing up. and i loathed them.

now i thank my mother for them everyday. i've only ventured back to sewing enough to do curtains and pillows. i would love to take classes to learn more on clothing (esp. dresses and skirts!).

  27. I have a new year's resolution to sew two articles of clothing, and I haven't even started!! My mom is an amazing sewer/quilter, and she unfortunately did not pass that onto me. I would LOVE to take summer lessons. I'm a teacher and have a 20 month old little girl, so during the school year doesn't really work.
