I'm better at dresses.

In preparation for the big bedroom switch of 2010 (it's inevitable with a new baby coming, right?), I decided to make matching twin quilts for Oliver's new beds (aren't those dark blue vintage jenny lind beds perfection?). I'm not sure what I was thinking. I've never made a real quilt in my life. During the process, I learned three important things.

1. I am not a quilter, and people who make pretty quilts are really really talented.
2. It takes forever, and I am not a patient seamstress.
3. It's expensive. I could have almost purchased two twin sized quilts from somewhere like Target for what I spent on materials. Not to mention time.

Oh well.
Now I know.

At least I like the finished product, amateur though it may be. But from now on, I will stick to apparel, thank you very much.

Have a good weekend!

  3. Steph, that turned out perfect! It looks antique with the colors you used. And you are right, quilting is an expensive hobby! But the end result is much more rewarding than buying the first thing that hits your fancy from Target.

  5. i love the colors too. i could never attempt quilting.
i bought a black king size quilt/comforter at target for 30 bucks, my mom cut in half and put binding on the cut side, and she gathered the bottom of it like a fitted sheet. now it will be easy for my girls to make their bunkbeds.
we are in full redecorating here and i need ideas for a boy room, time to move the boy out of ours.
    great job.

I bought a bunch of quilts at target at 50% to 75% off and it made me never want to quilt again! The last quilt I made took over 2 years to make and I then paid to have someone machine quilt it. I found a guy that does it for pretty cheap, but even with most of my fabric being given to me the whole process and time was a ton more than the cute quilts I got a target. Quilts are a true labor of love.

  7. I think you and I are alike. I could sew almost anything and I am now at the point where I am making up my own patterns. But every time I try to quilt I end up with an unfinished project! It frustrates me! My mother is 87 years old. Twenty years ago she started making a quilt for each of her children an grandchildren. They are all beautiful works of art. She always jokes about how she had better get busy! She has five more to go "and not that many years left"!

I think you have to be born with "it"!

  8. Nicely done. And I feel almost exactly the opposite. I'm sewing dresses for the roadshow at the moment, and I just wish I could quilt them!! :)

(I made a rag quilt & learned that I FOR SURE am no quilter. wayyyy too impatient & imperfect.)

  11. You have great taste - love it. Funny, most quilters feel the exact opposite - apparel seems difficult.

  12. i am no quilter, either, but i've often wondered which is cheaper - target spreads or a hand-made one. thanks to your experience, i'll probably just go with target. though i must say, your's are beautiful. i doubt my target ones will have a fraction of the classy factor.

i think it looks great...and it will be an heirloom...heirlooms don't exist at target!

  14. You may not call yourself a quilter, but your quilt is awesome! I'm a quilter and I just made your onesie dress...my daughter-in-law had the same fabric in her stash...now we're onesie dress makers and quilters!
    Love your blog!

  16. Great work! Your kids would never go out of their way to brag about or keep quilts you bought at Target but they will preserve and treasure quilts (and clothes) made by their mother's hands! HEIRLOOM!

  17. I actually quilt and I love the quilt you made. I think it looks wonderful from what I see. Love the jennyliund beds and the color combo you picked for the quilt. give yourself a little more credit. sure you could of bought them, but the fact that you made them is all the more better. Your kiddos will love snuggling under them cause you made them.

  18. You took the words right out my mouth. I feel the exact same way. I would love to be in love with making quilts, but I've found after several unfinished attempts it's just not my bag for the exact same reasons you listed. Now I'm not alone in my sentiments about quilting!
