a pretty bowl and some pancakes
We enjoy pancakes. I make them several times a week and I always use a ratty old plastic bowl for the batter. Even though I have a whole stack of really pretty bowls. It's like I'm saving the nice bowls for some sort of special occasion. I do the same thing with clothes.
I hate that I do that.
Today I made our pancakes in this cheerful green bowl. As silly as this sounds, it made for a much nicer pancake-making experience. So I'm going to stop saving my nice things for a special day that will probably never come.
Anyway, here is the recipe for our favorite pancakes:
IHOP-ish Pancakes
1 1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 heaping teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
pinch of salt
1 egg
1 1/4 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup oil
a few teaspoons wheat germ
Mix it all up and pour onto a preheated skillet.
I rarely have buttermilk, so I use the one-tablespoon-of-vinegar-for-one-cup-of-regular-milk substitution. Stella and I enjoy them with chunky peanut butter and syrup. Mabel and Oliver go the boring route with plain old butter and syrup. Sometimes we get fancy and put whipped cream on top.

ReplyDeleteMmm. I wish Ted and I had time to eat breakfast together. I would love to make pancakes several times a week. Yum!
ReplyDeleteThose sound wonderful. We will try them this weekend. Since the boy are going to be camping.
ReplyDeletei learned really quick into my marriage that my husband doesn't "do" just add water mix pancakes. so i have been using a scratch recipe from my mom, but now i am going to try this one.
ReplyDeleteYou are a good mom, my kids have been making their own breakfast for a few weeks and i was liking it ALOT. but i need to make them warm breakfasts.
* i don't own wheat germ. oh and i got a buttermilk mix at wal mart for those times i don't have liquid on hand. Love the bowl.

ReplyDeletei always get the most bizarre cravings for pancakes every now and then. like i have to have them. right. now.
ReplyDeletebut still i have never actually made them. seriously i'm the most deadbeat cook ever:)
We are a pancake family as well, and I make them from scratch nearly every time. I also made waffles last week on our waffle maker, those were so good! I'll have to try out your recipe. =)
ReplyDeleteyou don't know me, but i read your blog all the time-- love it, by the way. i've never commented 'cause like i said, you don't know me. but, i figure, if someone read my blog all the time, i'd love to know it. so maybe you're the same. and also, i wanted to say thanks for making me feel less weird-- i thought my family was the only one who ate peanut butter on pancakes.
ReplyDeleteI am the same way about 'saving' things- especially clothing like you said. So this inspires me to break out of my boring old self. thanks for the recipe, I love that it has wheat germ!:) btw, I found your blog through Jennifer Whitings..and you look familiar?
