Thanks to my parents and the birthday I celebrated last week (yikes! I'm 28. That sounds old!), I have a Border's gift card burning a hole in my pocket.
What is the best book you've read lately?
(Please spare me the Twilight speech. I'm just not into it, ok?)
Here, I will give you a suggestion if you give me one:
I just finished Atonement by Ian McEwan. It is about Briony, a highly imaginative 13 year old, and the terrible misunderstanding she creates one hot summer day in Britain in the 1930's. It goes on to follow her through the beginning of World War II and into the 21st century as she deals with her past. It is currently being made into a movie starring Kiera Knightly. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I love Diana Galbadon's books. She has a series of 5 books and I am reading them for the 2nd time! The first one is "The Outlander".
ReplyDeleteEveryone who I know that has read them just love them. Check them out- you might like them. They are history, romance, mystery, adventure all rolled into one series. They start out in Scotland in 1945 and then go to 1741. Read the back of the book!

ReplyDeleteI just finished Elizabeth and Mary, by Jane Dunn. It was good. Maybe that is better library material though? I haven't read any good novels lately besides Harry Potter and the would be a four letter word around here if it weren't spelled t-w-i-l-i-g-h-t.

ReplyDeleteIt can be a life changing book. It is definitely for the intellect (which you and Mike seem to be) and demonstrates the "natural" way humans would interact with each other. It is worth owning.
Anyone that has read it, as well as I, give it 5 out of 5 stars.
I have "The Odyssey", a book called "Saturday", and "Much Ado About Nothing". I have to read all three of these for one of my classes but you are welcome to borrow them at any time... And if while you are reading you feel like writing a chapter by chapter summary, it would really help me out... I'd make it worth your while cause I hate reading.

last night i just finished a book called "life of pi." it was REALLY good. not like anything i've ever read before.
ReplyDeleteit's about a 16 year old boy whose ship sinks with his family on it. and he is stuck on a lifeboat with a bengal tiger. it's his story of survival.
I have no suggestions, but I'm gonna try the one you just read...sounds really good.
ReplyDeleteoh wait, i do have a suggestion. we are reading "The Agony and the Ecstasy" for our book club this month. Margarie Pay Hinckley said something like, no one should die before they read it....or something like that.
ReplyDeleteFor you I would suggest the following: Crow Lake, A Tale of Two Cities, Frankenstein, Seventh Son, or The Screwtape Letters if you haven't read them. I want to read a George Elliot, Henry James, or some other British classic. Any suggestions?

ReplyDelete(Some of my favorites are "These is my Words" by Nancy Turner-- about a girl growing up in the Arizona territories; "Out of the Dust" by Karen Hesse-- about a girl living in the dust bowl during the depression; and "Cane River" by Lalita Tademy-- follows four(?) generations of black women during & after slavery).
i would say The King of Torts by John Grisham. It's my fav of all his novels. Very well written.

ReplyDelete"The Peacegiver"... an important book and new look at the atonement. And Robin McGraw's "Inside My Heart"... found it pretty boring... Got tired of reading how great she, her boys, her husband and her life are and how she did it from her life-choices... ok, maybe that's a good point, but got old.
