What do you do with a really yucky, gold, 30 year old linoleum floor that you can't afford to replace?
Why, you paint it red, of course.

I painted it 2 days ago and it is still tacky.
Help!
*UPDATE*
After speaking with the nice customer service representative lady at Behr Paints,
I was assured that the stickiness would end in about 2 weeks.
(2 weeks!!)
If that doesn't work, we will have to switch to plan B.
But first I will have to come up with said plan.

Hi there, never left a comment before but I did this with my own floor so I had to share...Go out and buy so me floor grade polyutherane(sp?) at lowe's or home depot. I works great and the paint will be smooth and not tacky. YOu might want to put a few coats of it on. I did this on a floor in my old home and it worked. You might want to reapply the poly about every 6 months. I hope this helps
ReplyDeleteSorry...SO. MANY. ERRORS. I really should read it before I send :( Buy SOME floor poly....BTW this stuff is pretty strong smelling so you might want to have someone else put it on for you. Also, make sure you check to get the right finish that you want for the floor...high gloss, semi, etc. I used high and it looked nice. okay, I'll stop now :)
ReplyDeleteoh no! sticky? what a pain. sounds like a good weekend project for old Mike. :)
ReplyDeletedon't go near that stuff till your baby comes out, steph!
my vote is still for polyurethane. robby is very skilled in that area.
ReplyDeletemaybe we could have a wonderful weekend get together where robby and i and probably mike work on the floor while you sip virgin pina coladas with your feet up. a/c and a fan pointed right on you, of course.
i am impressed by your creativity. it looks cool, good luck with the drying...
ReplyDeleteYikes, hope it dries soon!
ReplyDeletewow, now, i am a painter of things and mostly black ... but i would never have even thought to paint the floor! but very cute.
ReplyDeleteooooh, red floor! I love it! Is that a bathroom?
ReplyDeleteI hope it dries soon, it will look awesome! You are creative and brave. If the linoleum doesn't work out, you could strip it up and paint the concrete- we had that in our old house and if they had done it well, it could have looked really good. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteSorry, I'm not David, I just noticed my brother had signed in on my computer!
ReplyDeleteso cute.. what fun. i've always wanted and old house with old hard woods to paint red. but linoleum works too!
ReplyDeleteSteph I asked your uncle Bob the painter and he suggested the polyutherane and said that should work and keep the paint from wearing off. You will probably need 2 or 3 coat or more. Do it in a WELL ventilated room and perhaps Mike should do it for you as you are pregnant. You are so much like I am you just do it!
ReplyDeleteI love the red floor!!!

If you use the poly (I won't even attempt to spell that), be sure to use the matte. We also find that flat lacquer works really great for our projects. Depending on the size of the room, you could probably even use the spray can kind (super handy from Home Depot). I can ask Tyler what he suggests. I'm sure he knows just the right thing (we do all sorts of "sticky" finishes that NEVER dry on their own)... and waiting 2 weeks isn't it... you will have all kinds of smudges and junk stuck in by then! It looks great by the way =)
ReplyDeleteLove it! :)
ReplyDeletered floors?! HOW FABULOUS! sorry about the sticky, though - it will be SO worth it in two weeks, yes? :D
ReplyDeletered, how fun-hope it works out.
