Trauma in the Kitchen, or The Haircut

When we moved to Arizona, Mabel decided to grow her hair out. It was almost to her shoulders when she changed her mind. A couple of weeks ago she told me that she wanted it to be short. I gave her some time to change her mind again, but when she didn't, we decided to go for it.

I ended up cutting it quite a bit shorter than I had planned, and I must admit that in the middle of it all I very nearly gave up and thought I should take it to a professional to get fixed. But I just kept cutting. I actually think it turned out pretty well for my extremely amateur skills.

However, once she saw herself in the mirror, she burst into tears. It was shorter than she expected and she hated it. I felt terrible! I knew exactly how she was feeling, since I have shed tears over many a haircut in my lifetime.

I did my best to console her, but nothing helped. I think she looks really sweet with short hair, but as of today, we are officially growing it out again. I hope she changes her mind.

What do you think?

Right before I snapped this picture she said, "I don't feel like smiling."

  1. She looks beautiful, and the haircut looks good too. :)
You're very brave to cut her hair. I usually cut our boys hair, but at least half the time all I do is buzz it. :)

  3. It turned out really cute! I love that cut on little girls. My 4 year old, Hannah, has only ever had hair cuts from me... it doesn't grow very fast. and we talk about them almost daily while she sheds tears as I try to comb through her hair... any snarl is a cause for tears for her (= My 18 year old sister has beautiful long, blonde hair and Hannah always asks to wash her hair with "Melanie's shampoo" (anything that looks adult and isn't in a L'Oreal kids bottle (= ) So "it will grow faster". It's so cute that they are so aware of their hair from such a young age.

  4. I've had bad hair-cutting experiences, too - lots of tears shed from time to time. The other week, Leslie gave me a much-needed trim and she commented on the fabulous job you do in the hair realm...so my question is this - when you are here in a couple months, want to give me a slight A line? From what I've seen, I trust you completely - Mabel looks picture perfect!

Mabel you look beautiful. Your pretty face shines and your haircut looks just like it is out of a fashion magazine. Remember if you are unhappy now it will always grow and it growns about 1/4 of an inch every 2 weeks. Love and hugs
    Great Grammy.
Steph you did a super job!!!!

I think that picure makes her look like a 29 year old woman, and like everyone else has said, from a magazine. Your kids are growing up way too fast.

  9. It definitely looks great. Like most haircuts, it will probably take her a few days to realize she actually likes it.
