summer vacation, so far

Well, we are one week into summer vacation, and it might be a little premature to say this, but I think we are going to be just fine.

When I was growing up, summer vacation was all about watching too much tv, going swimming, and getting really really bored, all with minimal parental involvement. I want that for my kids, too. I don't think my children need me to entertain them, or to provide activities for them. They need to build things with legos, or draw pictures, or get lost in a book. And then they need to get really really bored, so that come August, they are excited to go back to school.

So this is our summer plan: hang out at home all day in our pajamas doing whatever we want until it's time to go swimming. Then eat dinner and go to bed. And repeat.

We have some fun trips planned, too, so we are looking forward to those. That's it! Oh, and a guitar. Mabel is borrowing my sister-in-law's guitar, so hopefully she can learn a few chords by summer's end.

I think it's going to be great.

  2. I too like your plan! :) That's how I fondly remember my childhood summers and that's what I've had for my daughter most summers when she was growing up, though I always planned some fun family getaways, vacations, and such too, because we had that growing up. We still pretty much have that even though we're adults because we've made it a priority in our family to really enjoy summertime. School, at least through High School, is now a thing of a past at our house... my daughter begins college nearby in the fall, so she's still at home and still enjoying vacations with us. :)
    Enjoy your summer.

  3. I started following your blog when you were featured on Clover Lane. I rarely comment but had to today. It is so refreshing to read your simple summer plans. I find most parents these days scrambling to have their children involved in every possible activity available. Not only is it expensive but exhausting. I think it has children expecting excitement every waking moment. Thank you for sharing this with us and making me feel good that I am not the only parent who is happy with a "lazy" summer.

  5. That's my plan as well, along with some deep cleaning and repurposing/decorating projects. Gotta get to that while I have time and labor :D

  6. Childhood summers are all about kids having fun away from school so they can arrive back refreshed in the fall. I like it to be about travel, summery swims, lazy picnics and exploration. A lot of kids these days like it to be about their new console game sadly!
