Speaking of making something out of nothing. . .

Oliver is serious about our "new" bench.

Mike and I are doing this thing where we try not to buy things we don't need. {I know, novel, right?} Well, I wanted something to hold shoes in the kitchen, because we always seem to end up with a huge pile of shoes there, and Stella likes to chew them, which is totally gross. A while ago, my mother-in-law gave me a little cupboard with a basket inside. It was white and a little beat up and I didn't quite know what to do with it so I stuck it in our Arizona room {a patio-turned-sunroom, just fyi}. I painted it red {because doesn't everything look better painted red?} and made a pillow for the top and now we have a place to sit and put our shoes on and it didn't even cost any money.

Now, if only my stuff would sell on ebay and Craigslist, I could go buy a message board for my new office {because some people (like Mike) don't think that is a necessity}.

  2. nothing better than a shoe bench. well, maybe a new message board . . . i found some SUPER cheap cork "tiles" at the craft store. they're 4 for $2 or something like that. they're 12x12, just the size of scrapbook paper, so i just attached pretty paper and made a square on my wall with all four. looks better than it sounds. and cheap. for Mike. :)
ps you should put links on your blog to your craigslist/ebay stuff. you know people would buy it if they knew it came from their favorite blogger! ;)

  4. steph, you have the best house. i can just imagine how cozy and peaceful and yummy-smelling it is all the time... i wish i were your neighbor so we could hang out and let the babies chew on shoes together (abe was doing that tonight--yuck).

  5. It's true...everything looks better red. Except skin.
I just bought a red sofa, and a red bookcase. They looks awesome...but not quite as awesome as that cute little shoe seat :)

And a message board is a necessity, especially with growing kids. I am looking for one, too.

  13. If you don't mind settling for chalkboard, you can tape off a section of your wall (or use scrap board) and use chalkboard spray paint. Then put ribbon around the edge--voila! Message board. Now I want a cute bench and basket for my red kitchen! :)

  15. that is awesome! I love making something new like that! It is more fun than just buying something that everyone else has! Funny I am not even sure how I got to your blog, but when I made a comment I realized I saw my sister Ginger's comment too. I am assuming you are in AZ like her. I thought you were here in AK with me. dang it! :)
