It's never too young to start
I introduced "Pride and Prejudice" to Mabel today (to Oliver, too, though he was more interested in his truck book). It is the most beautiful movie. Mabel thought the Bennet sisters were princesses. Heaven forbid we watch a movie that does not involve princesses. I know there are those of you out there who prefer the original BBC version, and I agree that the new Mr. Darcy is definitely not the old Mr. Darcy, but you cannot deny the musical score, nor the performance of Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennet. He is supreme. I have watched it twice in the past 3 days. I think Mabel liked it, too.

My kids (boys included) have seen almost all the jane austen movies, including BOTH pride and prejudices... I think these may be to my kids what the B and W movies I watched with my mom were to me...
ReplyDeletelove it - can't live without it, you know.
ReplyDeleteI DO prefer the BBC version (though I love the new Mr. Darcy almost as well) but I indeed cannot deny the charm of this new one (though I don't like the last minute or 3). If you like these movies, go rent, check out, or buy Wives and Daughters, it is the best of all.
ReplyDeletei actually prefer this version. my friends and i think this new mr. darcy is actually better than colin firth. he's not as immediately attractive, but i prefer how he plays the character. i had such low expectations going into this movie, and i just think the BBC one is way too long. you don't need 6 hours to tell the story. and plus this is just one of the most beautiful movies ever - straight up. i love this one and persuasion because they feel so true to the grungy, realistic atmosphere of the time vs. the idealistic "emma." anyway, i love this movie - hey, i introduced mabel to roman holiday while we were on the cruise! although her and annie were appalled that she, a princess, would cut her hair. :)
ReplyDeleteYou DO need 6 hours... this movie jumps around too much... they wrote the script on the assumption that everyone is familiar with the story, but when I dragged poor Elliott to the movie, there were a couple of parts where he was confused because they hadn't built the foundation for what was happening!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this new version yet, I think I will go rent it today.
ReplyDeletejill and i really like this movie. one night we decided to memorize it. i play a wicked good mr darcy and we just use pillows for all the other characters.
ReplyDeletepillows?? Awesome. I agree, you do need 6 hours. So when are you and Mabel going to sit down and watch the real version? ; )
ReplyDeleteI love this one and persuasion because New Trends they feel so true to the grungy, realistic atmosphere of the time vs.
