From a House to a Home

An ideal homemaker is able to transform four walls into a home by creating both spiritual and physical beauty therein.

Have you ever stopped to consider that the personality of a home is usually a reflection of the personalities that dwell in it? Winston Churchill said, "We shape our houses then our houses shape us." Because your home will REFLECT your personality and because it will also AFFECT your personality, it's well worth putting forth special effort to have it just as you would like. Your home is undoubtedly the most important temporal possession in your life. Unless you do something to create in it both spiritual and physical beauty, it remains nothing more than a shelter. A sunny, gracious atmosphere in your home makes you feel radiant and happy. Dull surroundings push you into a depression. Plan to do something each day to improve your home so that your improvement will never cease and so that it can bring out the best that is in you and the others who dwell therein. Make your home a haven of peace and beauty for your family. Make it a place where friends will want to visit again.

  1. yes - our homes are a complete reflection of our personalities. that's why my condo in provo is crazy! it's quite a good symbol of the combined personas of me and my 2 roommates. :)it may not be to everyone's taste, but we love it!

  2. i love that quote, that book was a great find! I think it's so important to make our homes places of peace; i remember our house growing up was always nice and quiet, with nice music playing, even when all the kids were home. no one yelling or shouting, and that's how i try to keep my house too. i want it to be a place where people want to be, both family and friends. thanks steph! great post.

  3. I love that! IT reminds me of something I read in the Bible Dictionary under TEMPLE. "A temple is literally a house of the Lord, a holy sanctuary in which sacred ceremonies and ordinances of the gospel are performed by and for the living and also in behalf of the dead. A place where the Lord may come, it is the most holy of any place of worship on the earth. Only the home can compare with the temple in sacredness."

  4. I, too, love this quote. We have also been told that our homes are the places where we have total say as to the feeling therein. We control what comes in, what is asked to linger and what is turned away - so refreshing in a time in the world's history when many of the influences on our young families (and ourselves, for that matter) are out of our control. Bottom line, no matter how small it is, it is YOURS and you control it - what a beautiful concept.
